    1939 m38 7.35

Finally found one that condition, price and availability all worked for me.

M38, 1939 7.35 SA marked. Terni manufacture, stock matches with both 1939 Terni cartouche and serial number. Front sight replaced by Finns with higher one and then filed down to present appearance. Everything else seems unmolested. Bore is very good, not a blemish in it. Trigger is the nicest carcano trigger I've tried. Has some stock blemishes and the blueing is thin on the receiver. I have not taken it apart as of yet and am in no real hurry too, almost no rust on this, only spots were on the front end cap and I removed that already. Missing cleaning rod from the butt stock.

Bayonet is unsharpened and has some of that odd reddish tint left on it.

They originally came together as a set but I have a bayonet already so I just purchased the rifle for $150. After thinking it over, offered him $75 for the bayonet and came home with both. His original asking price for the pair was $335. Without the bayonet, he asked $225 which I said was too high for me. He asked what I wanted to offer and I threw out the $150 figuring we'd end up somewhere in the middle but he accepted it straight off.

I think I just had the perfect timing on this. The show had been going on for three hours today and they were unable to sell any firearms due to the instant check system being down. I told him I'd wait till it came up, filled out the paperwork and as soon as I was done, it came back online. I was their first sale of the day and the woman I was talking with said they were hurting due to the lack of sales.

I haven't seen a Carcano at the last four gun shows, today I found three, all in similar condition and similarly priced at around $230. Two were SA's and one was a 6.5. That one was also in the worst condition of the three.

I'm not sure what this stamping is. I can't find a similar one in my book.

I haven't given it a lot of thought about selling the other bayonet but here is the link to it and the discussion of the handles.

    Carcano folding bayonet

If I do sell, it will only be the bayonet, not the scabbard.

Nice. I have it's slightly older twin, s/n E 43xx, also Finn marked. If you can live with it being filed don't change the front sight blade. As you know this is a Finn mod so it will shoot to POA at 100yds, which is exactly what mine does with military ammo. The numbers you mention above the current s/n look like old serial numbers to me, mine has them too. I think some if not all 7.35's were made by rebarreling 6.5's so that may well be what they are. The odd reddish tint on the bayonet blade is whats left of the original finish. Years ago I had a fixed folder in mint condition with the same color finish on the blade, unfortunately I lost it an a fire along with a very nice Kragicon, a Trapdoor carbine, my first Luger and an 1859 Sharps carbine.

I had thought the markings were Finn markings of some sort but I did some research and it appears this is a case of recycling. They used worn out 6.5 long rifle barrels and rebored them to 7.35 and that is indeed an old serial number. The year might be on there too but I may have to take it apart to find it. Supposed to be very common with this caliber.

I guess I'm on the hunt for ammo for this as well now. I have a grand total of 9 rounds that I picked up at a yard sale last summer.

I like the Finn front sight, I don't like that it was filed down. I'd like to get another Finn sight for it if I can. I found two types of front sight for it for $4 each but I don't think either was a Finn sight.

Very nice rifle. I watch for these but never seem to find them with a stock as untouched as yours. This one looks as though a GI in 1945 just handed it to you. Nice pictures by the way. I found one in a gun shop a few weeks ago, as I scanned it from top to bottom it looked perfect and untouched until my eyes reached the butt-- a %*#$@ rubber butt pad!! I went from high to low in a matter of seconds! Salt Flat

I had some time this afternoon and took it apart. As expected, very little rust anywhere on it, just a couple of small spots of surface rust on the barrel band interiors. All the parts that are stamped appear to be stamped Terni but what it interesting is that the receiver was made in April of 1917. So not only did they rework the barrels on these, the receivers were also reused. So the Italians did pretty much what the Finns and Soviets did.

I found another odd ball stamping under the butt plate that was over stamped partially with another Terni marking

If anyone has a photo of a Finn front sight for one of these, could you please post it so I know what the front sight is supposed to look like. A source for one would be great too. I expect the Finn sight is a lot better than the original Italianicon blade so I'd like to keep one on it if possible. Springfield Sporters lists two types of front blades on their website but I don't know if either is the Finn version or if there are two versions of the Italian blades.

Heres some sight pics as well as a few of the rifle it's attached to. Another interesting note on the 7.35 rifles is that when Italyicon entered WWII on Germanys side the plan to switch over to the new cartridge were stopped and all 7.35 weapons were withdrawn and replaced with those in 6.5. Some of the 7.35's were rebarreled for the 6.5x52 while others were used for training or put in storage. In 1940 Italy sold 100,000 of it's 7.35's to Finlandicon who appearantly did'nt think much of them and as soon as enough Mosin Nagants were on hand relegated the M38's to home defense units or scrapped them.

Took it to the range today with ammunition of unknown origins.

I had two different types of bullets, 7 round nose, 2 pointed, both types soft points which replaced the original military ball.

I figured I ought to get rid of this stuff so used it rather than the new stuff I just got.

Results weren't great but weren't bad for me, I'm not an open sight shooter.

I probably should have used the sights normally as this has the higher Finn front sight on it but I tried using the sight the way it has been recommended. The top of the front sight was at the bottom of the "V" and the large target circle was sitting inside the "V".

I had one flyer which was probably me.
