    Marking ID

Need help trying to identify a marking on a 44 Monotype MK2 Bren.
The marking is underneath the serial number.I have put a number from the serial in the pic for scale/size.

Not sure if marking is full or partial strike ?Letter ? looks to be a cross between a C or a G ?

    Any suggestions ?

    Many thanks Kevin

Its just a guess Kev but I dont think its one marking, could it not be a serial number in a foreign language. Its not Arabic for starters. Perhaps Asian, Thai, Malay, Singapore, Vietnam?

It looks to me like what we call 'worm corrosion'. A sort of thread pattern corrosion that forms from within the steel in that worm/thread pattern. It's almost like the fine corrosion thread pattern that you'll find threading its way under the paint on your car. One of the metallurgists (JM......) can tell us the technicalities of what it is. I say this because nothing about the marks is regular in a way that, say, the figure 7 is in shape, depth and thickness.

You would often find this worm corrosion on rifle bodies that have been painted over

    Kev:
Are you sure it is right way around...and not upside down. I recognize some farsi numbers in there.....maybe looking for too much, but if you invert it there are some farsi numbers.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Just updated with another pic to show position and orientation on top rear of the body just below the serial number.
Also added a pic highlighted with tipex and one cleaned.

If worm corrosion is it just a fluke a '3' has formed as opposed to a cameo of Maggie Thatcher ? Which way up are you seeing it Warren ?

Begining to wish I had never seen it now !
