Steyr M95 Carbine

I have a Steyr M95 Carbine that I want to sell and I am curious to what the value would be? I am not sure what caliber it is chambered in and wondering if there is a way to tell if it is 8x50R or 8x56R?

Numbers on the barrel, bolt, receiver, buttstock and a few other parts that I can see, all seem to match. The rifling in the barrel looks to be very crisp.

Stick in an empty 8x56R cartridge case. If it fits, that's the one, if not, it's the older 8x50R.

The vast majority of both carbines and rifles were made/converted to the more powerful cartridge. And many rifles were cut down to carbine length at the same time.
Clips are required, and can be rare and expensive, depending on where you live.
Sight picture is poor for target shooting.
The 8x56R is very rough to fire, the 8x50R is softer on the shoulder.
8x56R cases are available (PRVI-Partisan), 8x50R are in the hen's teeth category. Surplus ammo dried up long ago.
8x56R requires 0.329"- 0330" bullets. Good luck in finding them!
8x50R runs with 0.323" bullets, i.e. same as for a K98k, much easier to find.
So for shooting and collecting, the 8x50R is worth a bit more.
But neither is worth much.

8x56Rs hardly fetch a 3-figure price over here, 8x50Rs a bit more. It's a pity, because your carbine seems to have a very good stock.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have a 8x50R case or even a 8x56r case. I might have to try to make a casting of the chamber using wax and see if that will help figure it out.

It looks like a cut-down rifle and converted into a carbine. Probably a Model 95/34 out of Austria. 8x56 R cartridge. You can find the ammo in clips at the big gunshows in your area. You will need the clips to test fire it. They hurt with the military load.

It will likely have a large S over the chamber. This indicates it was changed to 8X56R.

They seem to be selling for about $200 or so around here.

SOG has them for $113.00 if you have a C&R FFL.....I just bought one,really nice shape...!
