A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Not the best photographs. Nice to see a listing with an honest description

Enfield produced 2500 No. 4 Trials rifles in 1931. 1430 of those were later converted to sniper rifles. This is one of those 1430 rifles. This rifle has seen lots of service. Most of the Trials rifle features have been replaced with standard No. 4 parts. That is not uncommon. The bore is good. The bolt matches, but it is a replacement. The scope is a Mk I, as it should be, and the it is very clear. It does not match the rifle. This is a rare rifle and great addition to any collection. Please let me know if you have any questions.

At the risk of being a pedant I think it was 1403 not 1430, but as you say it's a pretty straight description & I'm sure that was just a typo.

You'd think for that price the seller would spend a small amount of time on decent photographs. Those are terrible!

Interesting that it has the same rather unusual looking safety catch as boltaction's trials No4(T) in the recent thread. I believe that particular configuration was seen on early Maltby rifles as well.

Looks to be one of the high number Watson MkI scopes in the 14,000 range. 14406?

Hard to see of course, but appears to be seven digits in the rifle number stamped on the bracket, so perhaps a Savage or Long Branch number?

A No3 bolt head and a replacement bolt = long hard service!

There's a rifle that was in use from 1941/2 to 1945 and who knows how long after that. Look at the damage to the rear edge of the rear pad!
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

Much changes, much remains the same.

Screws in the front pad look just like the stainless ones I used in my repro 4T build. Interesting rifle, I think if I wanted a safe queen 4T it would be one with a lot of history that deserved a nice quiet place to rest...
