    Here's my M44

I picked this up last summer. It's a 1945 Izhevsk. The bore is good, stock is ugly. Shoots pretty well, kicks hard. It has import marks from Cole Distributing on the bayonet mount.
Anyone recognize the stamps in the photos? It also has a circle with the number 57 inside it, stamped on the stock near the buttplate. The diamond stamp has three characters in inside it, but I can't make them out.
I took it to the range last weekend, along with the No. 4 Mk1*. Came home with a bruise.

What's wrong with the stock? Looks good to me. Blueing is pretty much gone no big deal gives that nice patina look.
Please don't whine like a little girly man "came home with a bruise" its unbecoming of an M44 owner. Is that a recoil pad? there's no recoil pads aloud in M44 ownership.!!

I've always wondered what makes the M44s so brutal in comparison to the 91/30s. They don't seem to weigh all that much less. Certainly they have more muzzle blast!

Last time I had my M44 out for a spin was probably 3 years ago, took it down to the pond to deal with some pesky gar fish that were camping out and eating up all the bream. Recoil as I remember wasn't all that noticeable but the report was deafening. In my 'pinion the Enfield No.5 kicks a bit harder than the M44, probably has something to do with the small surface area of the hard as a brick rubber ''recoil'' pad.

What generates bruise/blood blisters worse than anything for me is shooting an M14icon type rifle with the fold-up buttplate whilst wearing a light shirt. Getting pinched at some point is almost a certainty.

Either an M44 or 91/30 after 20 rounds I'm starting to feel it. By 40 rounds my shoulder is raw and I'm flinching, defiantly noticeable. It has to be the narrow steel buttplate.

Not whining, just stating a fact. That steel buttplate slams my bony shoulder harder than anything I've fired before. The fireballs make it worthwhile though.

Agreed. My M1Aicon leaves a mark also. The recoil doesn't seem as strong as the M44 though.

Thanks. I got it for $139.00 last summer.
Here are a couple of pics from a range trip right after I bought it. In the first photo, note the puff of smoke right behind the cocking piece. I had just fired a dud round, the primer was pierced but the powder charge did not ignite.
My 1978 vintage M1Aicon is in the background.
