1886 Steyr Portuguese Kropatschek Restoration Question
I am in the process of restoring an 1886 Steyr kropatschek rifle. I've run into a problem with removing the mag tube. The tube must be moved about three inches or so in order to remove the action from the stock. In my sources a home made tool is shown, but I can't figure out how to make one. I'd appreciate some help.

Got this from another board: Figured it out, the secret is you have to remove the magazine tube about an inch or so and of course it is stuck and fragile. I used an old 577/450 case which was floating around my reloading bench, drilled and tapped the end for 8-32 threads, (same as your cleaning rods) cut a long screw so I had a treaded stud, locked it down with a nut. tapped it into the end of the brass tube and used a small hose clamp to lock the tube to the case. Hooked a cleaning handle and puilled, slid out
like a charm. Receiver out and ready to clean..
It worked !

If you can do photos whilst it's apart it would be welcomed! I've never been inside one of those rifles.

Very ingenious! Not a stuck case remover but a stuck tube remover!

BTW, JM and Kanterj, the disassembly of a Kropatschek is illustrated in a series of 15 steps + a page on dismantling the bolt in
"A Collector's Guide to Military Rifle Disassembly and Reassembly" by Mowbray & Puleo.
The necessity to move the tube forwards is noted and shown in Step13, on P99.

Dang, now where's the fun in that? I started taking things apart and putting together without instruction as a small child and haven't gotten better since!
