Villiers, its apart at present have got the nose cap and band to blue, plus needs a small tweak on the fore-end as the nose cap was hard up against the barrel.
Once all together again will post some decent pics, it should at that point have the spring retainer for the band and maybe the sight cover.
Nice sword, never had any swords (plenty of bayonets) but thought I may look for one to go with it.

Don´t want to criticize a great effort ... but it does look as if it needs a spot of linseed on the wood as well.

Its had two or three coats so far, its nice and dry now and like you say needs a spot more, just wanted to see what it was like on the range, before the final fettling and a good soak in linseed.

I have the last nitro-competition for this year at the weekend. After that, I will be happy to take up the challenge "Boer War Mauser vs. Enfield"!

Where can I place my bet on the Enfield. BTW what does a Mauser cav. carbine look like? (to compete fairly, it´d have to be a shorty. Did they ever make one?)

It´s def. a `carbine´. But Germans seem to call anything a carbine that´s shorter than a G 98. Even the K98k is a `98 short carbine! So which (internationally made) `carbines´ would be acceptable in the above mentioned shootout?

Masses of them. Take a look at "Mauser Military Rifles of the World".

Well today my nosecap arrived from NZ and I must say it is a work of art. Absolutely amazing machining and thanks bigduke6 for the lead where to get one. The forend and handguard are being made in NZ at this moment and I am anxious to get started on bringing the old girl back to respectability. Lots of work ahead and seeing I have never done this will go slow and hopefully all will end well.

Reason: spelling of course
Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

Nice to see that appreciating cavalry carbines does not mean you´re a group of one. If I was a collector, I´d now be looking for an `88 cav. carbine. And I can´t find a shoulder strap for my Werder:
