1891 Carcano Carbine Handguard

I recently acquired what I believe to an 1891 Calvary carbine. I am wondering about the handguard. What handguard will fit. It seems that it will fit between the sight and the barrel band. I can't seem to find a clear pic on line.

It is just a small handguard:

Now it depends on what model the carbine is. If it has the older sight, the handuard will be grooved/cut for the rear sight to flip over and into.

Thanks, the sight on mine has a lever on it. Is this the old or new?

The "lever" or adjustable sight is the old sight. The sight in the photo is a later rifle with the fixed rear sight. They are a little fragile because the cut is deep and they have a tendency to crack which may be why yours is missing.

What year is yours? And if you can post photos, I'm sure everyone would love to see it. If you plan to shoot it, you'll probably need to reload because the current production bullets are undersized and thus inaccurate enough to miss the proverbial barn door.

Modern ammo is great because it gives you the BRASS, something which we have been short on for the last 40 years. I am still reloading old WW casings and praying that they don't give up the ghost on me.

Hornady makes a .268 Carcano bullet.

I find that if your rifle is reasonably tight-bored, you can use 4198 powder to kick a soft Remington 140 flatbase bulk bullet hard enough to expand the base and get decent accuracy. I have a Model 41 Carcano which positively loves those slugs: very tight bore on that one.

Springfield Sporters (ssporters.com) has half the Carcano parts in the WORLD..... and we can't get ANY of them! Prices are good, too, and you are in the USA, so there is your source.
