Modify S&W Mainspring for use in a Webley MkIV?

    Hi,

    The problem…

I need a mainspring for a Webley MkIV – the complicating factor being that it is a postwar police model with a crossbolt safety that has a smaller frame than the standard sized MkIV frame. An example can be seen here:

Webley Scott Ltd. Mk.IV Revolver. - Gun and Game - Firearms Forums

As far as I can tell, no one has these springs ‘off the shelf’. I was browsing through pictures of other revolver mainsprings and I noticed that the spring for the Smith & Wesson Model 10 / Victory type revolvers has a ‘double hook’ on one end much like that of the Webley spring.

So an obvious thought occurs; is it in theory possible to get a S&W spring, cut it to the right length, and then bend it into a suitable ‘V’ shape? Or is it likely to snap in the process?

I live in the UKicon so the gun in question is deactivated. Therefore the finer details of the trigger pull tension, etc. are academic – all it needs to do is correctly cycle the hammer and trigger.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. It would also be enormously helpful if someone who ones one of these small frame Webleys could tell me what the dimensions of the mainspring are?

    Many thanks,

    Mark

    EDIT.
Looks like there are some Colt mainsprings that follow the desired 'V' shape with double-hook on one end layout. I guess I'm looking for one with 'arms' that are around 2 inches long on each side. All suggestions gratefully accepted.
