S'G' m1 Carbine 1794480

I have this S'G' carbine within the IP first serial number range. It has an Underwood 6/44 barrel. I am guesssing this carbine is likely a S'G' substitution for a damaged IP receiver that was put together towards the end of carbine production in Grand Rapids. What do you folks think?

If the receiver is marked S'G' then your correct it is a replacement receiver. It was most likely done about late summer 1943. Your barrel is a replacement made by Underwood after they stopped production of carbines in April 1944. Underwood got a contract to make replacement barrels that went through the summer of 1944.

My research indicated that the changeover from IP marked receivers to S'G' marked receivers was before 1,791,xxx. IP marked receivers with serial numbers higher than that were stragglers in production. It appears that Irwin-Pedersen stopped stamping serial numbers before 1,791,xxx and started stamping the 3.2 million serial numbers for awhile. Around June or July, they changed back to the 1.79 million serial numbers and finished the block. I have a 1799xxx carbine with an early Buffalo Arms barrel dated 7-43. Once the Grand Rapids plant changed over from stamping receivers with the IP name, to the S'G' name, they did not change back to the IP name.

Is your 1799xxx IP or S'G' stamped?
