    School or Bannerman Krag

I have found a Kragicon that must be a Bannerman or school gun. It is full stocked but appears shorter then my rifle. The owner is knows guns but does not know the origin of this gun. He feels it is Bannerman or one of the many other surplus dealers. Looks like it would be a good shooter but I have not had the opportunity to do a first class inspection.

Condition looks good, but appears to be refinished. My question is what value can one put on such a rifle. Assume very good condition but refinished (of course the refinish may be from the original conversion.build). I feel that it is an example of a historical arm even it its changed condition, but value escapes me. Thanks in advance for advice. John McP

Read up a lot before considering the purchase. Besides Bannerman and the Armories, many short rifles were made by various veterans organizations, with both 24 and 22 inch barrels. On a school gun, the end of the 22" barrel should be turned down to accept a bayonet.

Went back for a better look, barrel is 22" and the end is approx 5/8" which I think will all mounting the bayonet. I forgot to look for the C on the rear sight. Bore is usual pitted but clean with some rifling. Not great as bores go but for a Kragicon not bad. Has definitely been reblued although a very good job. Stock has small repairs and may have been cracked and repaired, hard to tell. So it is a School Gun. Does anyone know of a site that covers Krag School guns as a subject?

Still looking for a value range.

If it were a PC rifle then it would be about the only one in the US. No, not likely at all. Just a school rifle of unknown origin. Workmanship looks good but value of the rifle escapes me.

    JDM,

What you are looking at is almost certainly a rifle that has been altered by someone other than a US arsenal. It could be worth as much as $300. But if it were me, I would look for another one, specifically one with good wood and a clean bore. Won't cost much more.

    Good luck!

I wouldn't mind having one, I like the full stock look but I also like short barrel handy for the woods around here. I like a rifle that doesn't drag the ground when I hold it by the wrist with my arm down. I've got enough parts around here, I could likely make one, without the turned down barrel.
