Uniform tested - soldiers with M-1s - of course

    Attachment 47268
"Yuma, Arizona, Two soldier testmen of the Quartermaster Test Team model the new experimental and the standard issue desert clothing worn during five weeks of experimental tests in the Imperial Desert of Southeastern California, near Yuma. Cpl. Laurence Kwiecinski of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (left), is one of three squads of testmen wearing the experimental uniform. Physiological checks were made and compared with results produced by a fourth squad wearing the standard issue as worn by Pvt. Thomas Yates of Bardwell, Kentucky (right). Outstanding features in the new garb are the cloth peaked cap and utility head cloth which afforded ample insulation to the head while protecting the desert trooper from the sun, wind and sand storms." August 16, 1951 Unaccredited/U.S. Army SC375980-S

    Attachment 47267
"Yuma, Arizona, The testmen who wear the experimental and standard issue clothing assemble each morning as the day‘s operations are outlined for them by the field testing officer and First Sergeant of the 56 enlisted men who live in the desert for the five weeks of research are assigned to four squads, with a portion of one squad continually wearing the standard issue (three men right of front row). The soldiers leave this work formation and proceed to the location for each day’s tests." August 16, 1951 Unaccredited/U.S. Army SC375982-S

Those test hats sure have a Germanicon Afrika Korps look to them.

If we're honest with ourselves we took a whole bunch of ideas from the Germans.

I don't know about them , but I have found that the neck cover is hot , cuts off the air circulation , and generally uncomfortable . Give me a wide brimed hat with vents every time.

Anything that restricts air circulation is hot...I used to keep a washcloth in the crown of my M1C helmet...the heat almost cooked me one day in Ft Lewis...didn't make that mistake again.

    Gotta love the desert here.
Gen. Patton also trained here and at Imperial. We used to go over to see the old camp sites when we would play out there.
