Best place to buy a K98?

    Hey Guys,

I'd like to pick up a WWII era Mauser for my collection. Looking for a decent shooter in reasonable condition, not a show piece. Where would be the best place to find something like that and what should I expect to pay?

    Thanks!!

Best place to buy one is when and where you find one. The prices have gone up a bit (like everything else) even a decent Russianicon capture is in the 400-600 range. I would suggest you post a WTB on a couple of mil surplus forums.

    Thanks guys!

I had seen the Mitchell's ads and online saw a lot of negative comments. I appreciate the info!

If you want a shooter, rather get an honest RC that may have been properly overhauled and can actually shoot. Avoid the illusion that there are pristine and magically untouched Wehrmacht Mausers to be had. It's strange - I live in the country where these things were made by the million, and there aren't any here. How come they seem to be available on the other side of the pond? If someone offers you such a one, then the chances are it's been faked. Go RC and pay for the rifle, not a story.

I disagree Patrick. I collected 98K rifles for many years and had a dozen honest, matching rifles plus a few more with mismatch bolts and some restoration work. I still have a couple plus an original high turret sniper rifle. Nothing fishy or fake about any of them. There are plenty of rifles here in the USAicon that were brought back by veterans and they're still out there escalating in price. I guess it boils down to, "to the winners go the spoils".

I guess you're right. I can only describe it as I see it from here. And would you sell one of your matching rifles for the same price as an RC? A34 wants "a shooter, not a show piece".

I know of 5 all matching K98icon's at my club. One fellow owns 2, they all get shot come Mauser league time.

I'm always in the middle of the pack with my RC but this year I have a secret weapon!!...A brand new M48...

Try empirearms.com They are a little pricy but they are honest people & describe it like it is. I know because I have bought from them in the past & I got exactly what there ad said.
