Type99 Restoration, saved from bubba.& cabelas.

Picked this up @ local tridelphia ,WV cabelas for 139.00, bubba had chopped down the stock ,lost the wings for the aircraft sights, tossed the bolt cover and monopod, and cut down the stock , MUM has barely been touched, minor repair, early kokura model. We are going to attempt to save her from bubbas chopping block and make her into mil-surp again. Took me a few months to squirrel up all the original ww2 era parts for it but i mnaged to get em all, all are 100% ww2 issue parts .

Here are a few after pics . cut down the dust cover or try and find a 6 incher is my only option on this part. This one is 1/6th of an inch longer and covers half the gas relief hole. I have an original sling and scabbard for bayo all parts and bayo are kokura tokyo. early model. Now to ponder the dust cover and take her to the range try her out.

Rather than trim off anything from the front of the dust cover, maybe take a little off the cutout for the bolt. It should bring the dust cover back the amount you want. Takes only a file and a few minutes. Then again, maybe leave it alone.
Fast way to check headspace is to remove innards of bolt, chamber an empty shell of correct size, close bolt and see how much back and forth movement of bolt there is. You can sense when it is really bad.

Checked headspace at cabelas before i left store , i took a dummy round i have loaded for just that purpose .did not think of filing the bolt groove in bolt cover, may work , may sell it and try and find 6 inch one, the early ones take a 6 inch and 6 1/16th inch depends on the series, i of course got the one too long by 6th of an inch or i would be done .

Well done, I have just finished my 5 MD (W.A) 1916 Lithgow No I Mk III a project of some 10 years as when I brought the rifle for $100.ooAU over the phone from a posted note on our notice board I was told yep she's a good'un mind you it had no safety or magazine, sling or bayonet at least it had the milled and stamped rear sight protectors.
Anyway lots of trolling sites and getting the correctly stamped parts that also looked good, complete dumbbell safety, a nice 5 MD '16 Lithgow 07 bayonet and 5 MD '16 Lithgow tear drop stud scabbard, correct mag I think as it is the transitional one from the Mk VI to the Mk VII ammo these are fairly rare now as well.
Correct year '16 sling Wright & Co, the bayonet and scabbard gave me the greatest grief getting good ones and costliest being both the correct date and Military district Western Australiaicon (5 MD).
And why is it people think they are doing the righty by varnishing the stocks on these weapons it now has a nice raw linseed/mineral turps 70/30 rub twice a year and finished off with a good rubbing of bees wax and resides in the safe except for the Anzac shoot we have every year.
Again well done Milsurp-60 it is well worth the efforts no matter what Milsurp's weapon we restore it is a great and fulfilling endeavour even though my wife has claimed the 1916 for her own rifle! tellya some people just swoop LMAO

my wife layed claim to my winchester m1 Carbine i was like you picked a good 1 lol.but she is only 4 ft 10 inches tall 102 lbs she does love that old carbine and a full 30 rounder , i put a red dot on it for her with a no drill- no tap mount ,she loves it. Better to get them on our side of the gun thing then on the other with the enemy and her going off on me over a new gun a month which is about what i average lately lol. Damn things seem to breed lol. And i agree squirreling up the parts to restore them and actually doing the works is the juice for me.
