Ernie Pyle's account of WW2 From Sicily 1943 to France 1944. My dog eared copy was copyrighted and printed in 1944.
This is a book full of personal accounts, interviews, and observations by Pyle while assigned as a war correspondent. He spread his time over Army, Navy, Marine, Air Corps and Medical Crops. He was ill a portion of the time so he was in field hospitals recovering, so he could provide first hand description of 'in the action' medical treatment.

He goes into detail on aspects of life in each branch and the task performed, and the men and women who performed them. I found it informative and written so you could read a chapter, or portion of a chapter as time permitted. The print in this 70 year old version was a bit small. As and example, Pyle describes the work of the small arms recovery team who would take broken and recovered small arms and repair and put them back into service. The cleaning and dismantling, repair and re-assembly, with out having to send them back to a rear area which would limit the ability to re-issue them as soon as possible where the weapons were needed most. The book hails the bravery and determination of each soldier no matter the assignment, at the front, or in the rear with the gear in a united effort to bring and end to the war.
