What is origin and purpose of yellow painted numbers on butt stock? Still learning and think I have a long way to go!

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. The numbers are an unauthorized rack number, that some unit put on it to keep up with where it was kept. Some used yellow or white.

I would say not a whole lot one way or the other. If the history of the rifle and numbers are known ( say the rifle was issued to the Arizona and those are navy rack numbers ) or the buyer likes those as part of the rifle's history , it can bump the price up. If they are not known nor wanted , most can be easily removed leaving no trace behind. They are not in the same class as nicks , dings , cuts or stampings.
