    ArisakaTypel 44, 6.5 Jap

A friend has one of these for sale and he would like some idea of what its worth. Can anyone help?

His dad brought it back from Japanicon where he had been with the US Army of Occupation. This isn't a battlefield pickup, it was a turn-in after surrender in Japan. The finish on the metal is very good, the wood is dented here and there but not too bad. It still has the sliding bolt cover and folding bayonet. The bore is shiny, no pits, excellent condition. One thing I notice is that the rifling seems to be cut shallower than western military barrels are cut. The bolt, receiver and muzzle cap/bayonet mount all have matching serial numbers. I couldn't find serial numbers anywhere else.

The chrysanthemum is defaced by two shallow hacksaw cuts in an X shape, nowhere near as ugly as the ground off ones.

I should add, my friend isn't looking for top dollar. He would prefer a reasonably fast sale at a fair price and to a good home.

Seems like good ones have been in the US$350-600 range, but that's going back three-four years. Always a little more than I've wanted to pay.

    Peterson's lists them at:

    $800 - Excellent
    $650 - Very Good
    $500 - Good
    $300 - Fair
    $200 - Poor

These prices are two years old, and are for rifles with matching numbers and intact mum. Says to deduct 25-50% for mismatched or ground mum. The mum is not ground but it is defaced so you would have to deduct some for that. Prices have gone up since "Pacific" came out.

762shooter is a good friend and I bought it from him, well paid him and he paid the owner. The "cut" across the mum is not that deep but does detract, think I may blue it but maybe not as it does show provenance for the rifle.

Overall it is a beautiful rifle, some dents and marks in the wood but the metal is beautiful and being number matched makes it a great gun.

It has found a good home, trust me..LOL

    PS

Also came with a real (deactivated) US grenade and a empty 75mm tank shell (case).
Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

    Sir,
Regardless what you paid, that is a VERY nice representative example! IMHO, while the defacing does detract somewhat... I think the overall conditions makes up for it.
    You did well!!!

The funniest thing is when I saw the rifle 762shooter was pulling it out of a short duffle bag. Flashed thru my mind "where is the rest of the barrel" never thinking that it would be a carbine. When asked originally if I would be interested in it I assumed (something you shouldn't do) it was a long rifle. Very happy to get it and this one will be shot on occasion.

Wish it like so many milsurps could talk.
