Hi, does anyone have the correct barrel spec's for the vietnam issued sniper rifles?, ie, diameter, crown etc.
I'm building a replica & want to make sure it's correct.

Hi Mate, I'm on a similar project at the moment:

The Winchester "medium/heavy" contour as it was known, is 1.140"Ø parallel for 2.000", then straight taper to a .780" finish @ 24" (Chrome Molybdenum). The contour for the model 70 "Bull gun" was heavier and longer again.
The factory crown on the target models was dead flat, with the inside and outside edge lightly broken.

Something to remember is that by 1966-68 the USMC model 70 examples weren't new rifles and once the factory barrels had worn out they were fitted with Hart and Douglas air gauged match barrels, (probably close but not necessarily of the same dimensions).

Thanks for the info mate, i've got a national guard stock & a 1955 action ready to fit. i managed to pick up a 15x lyman scope to finish her off.

I have a M70 with the medium/heavy barrel (and scope blocks) with the marksman stock. This rifle was manufactured in 1947 and was purchased around 1967 from a dealer who had purchased on auction a lot of ten M70 rifles from the Great Lakes Naval Base. Some of these M70 rifles had the standard weight barrels but most had the medium/heavy weight barrels, all were chambered for the 30-06 cartridge. They had scope blocks and some had target iron sights, believe this batch of rifles that the navy sold on auction were team target rifles, bore and condition of most were excellent. I have used the Lyman 15x on this rifle.

The pic's I posted, about my model 70, that I put a new stock on, was also a Navy sniper model from an Armory in R.I. it was 1 of 7 and had a Lyman 15x super target scope on it. I still have the scope, which I'm probably going to sell.
This is a very sweet shooter, probably my favorite.

Are you building a marksman stocked Post-WWII rifle, one of the Evaluator's Ltd. "oddball stocked" HB rifles or a Winchester rebarrel WWII vintage Model 70? Or even one of the standard WWII rifles with a scope? Then there's the Post '64 Model 70 "Police Rifle" that seems to have made it over there for some little time...

But for a generic replica, the specs given above will do. It all depends on how "correct" you want to be.

Nice rifle RCS, thats what i'm going to build. I have had in the past an original HB standard stocked version with a 10x unertl & also a marksman stocked version that had a 20x lyman. I did'nt take any measurements of the barrels before i sold them.

Anyone interested in the M70 sniper variations should check the history of the Van Orden M70 sniper rifles. Capt Van Orden had received 373 M70 rifles from Winchester by May 1942. Later on the USMC decided against adoption of the M70, but these rifles and others remained in their system to surface again in Viet Nam
