    Ross 1910 nosecaps

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find a pair of nosecaps. A friend is restoring a pair.

    Cheers

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. They are holy grails, but a few of us have been contemplating reproducing them.

For sure Jay. No clue when I will have time to try my hand at it. Although it sounds like there are two or three different parties interested in building the third variation caps soon in limited numbers. In my garage one cap would take me a full day.

You would be amazingly lucky to find one original. Every week on the CGN milsurp forum you will see a WTB ad looking for Ross nose caps. As was mentioned it might be worthwhile for someone to make repros on a small scale. Over the last ten years in Canadaicon there is a whole lot more interest in Ross rifles in and prices have gone up especially for bubba'd rifles(used to be $50-$75 now $250-$300. Original rifles are seldom on the market for reasonable prices so a lot of guys want to restore a sporter until they find out how scarce original wood and sling swivels, barrel bands and nose caps are.

Option 1. Precision cast. Dies for the waxes could be made from epoxy casting resin. OK for limited production, dozens, maybe hundreds of units. The die would be fairly complicated. Would be necessary to find a foundry that would do fiddly limited runs. Many years ago I was involved in the manufacture of reproduction flintlock guns; had dies made for all the lock parts, including springs. Making the dies would be low tech, but would require very careful work.
Option 2. CNC machining center. High tech solution.

How about 3D printing, or whatever it is called. Difficult part would likely be writing the program.

I'm not aware 3D printing is available for steel parts yet - is it?

Yes, 3 D printed parts in metal. LASER melts powdered metal. See 3D metal 1911 at below site.

    Ross Nose-caps.

Lazer-printing and CNC machining costs a nice chunk of change just to write all the code, reason why very small runs are not usually undertaken, plus all the tool bits/cutters required for every operation.
I'm looking for a 1905 nose-cap, for my commercial long heavy Barreled target rifle. I have a few photo's of both cap's, but no dimensions. If someone would be so kind as to supply me with some rough sketches, I can take a look at what's involved in making them, also some metal thicknesses. I would think low volume involved, fabbing some up would be the cheapest.
I'm new to Ross rifles, so I have no idea of the demand, so please don't yell at me. I have a small shop and some time on my hands, Lathe, Mill, Tig and Mig, also a 20ton press, and friends.
If I'm Barking thinking only a few are truly wanted, I do have a friend with a full cnc center and I could go and talk to him, in Canadaicon not China.
I would appreciate knowing the size of the sling swivels so I can bend some up, or buy some, Thanks in advance.
