Let's just say that the original owners no longer needed them. As Sgt. Major Basil Plumley said twenty years later before the battle of Ia Drang, when Col. Hal Moore told him he ought to abandon his 1911 and get himself an M16icon, "Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground."

Book was much better but the movie was pretty darned good. There's a follow-up book called We are Soldiers Still.

I have read it as well. Well worth the time to read as a follow up to the original book & movie. Brings the story full circle.
