were there more that 2 calibers in the jap rifles
hi need some info i have a dozen plus different jap rifles i recieved from an eldery lady. the ammo that came with them is marked 7.7. but 2 of the rifles have a smaller bore that the other ones all have same bore size. i am going to slug the bores, should i also invest in the stuff to make chamber case?? thanks mike

The 2 standard Japanese
calibers are 6.5x50mm and 7.7x58mm. There are some rifles made with cast receivers that were only intended to fire blanks. The bore on these may differ from the "real" rifles. Have your rifles checked by a competent gunsmith before firing.

hi these rifles all came from estate of an estate of a gun smith who was in business in the 193's on. i slugger the bore on the one rifle i was not sure of it mic'sout at 262. rifling is very light bore is dark. all number match on rifle botl an action stock was cut down but barrel is still real longwith orginal sights.

The rifling is "Metford rifling" it is NOT conventional rifling.

Seems not too far off. that would likely be a Type 38, but the receiver ring markings will tell the exact type. not too hard to decipher at all!

The 6.5x50mm would be .264<> diameter and the 7.7x58mm would be .311<>. It sounds like the one you slugged is a 6.5mm. I hope this helps.

thank you for the info. i have so many gun an boxes to go thru an try an identify. plus decide what to keep an what to selll. still have 4 55 gallon druns full of guns an parts that he put in oil that i have no clue whats in there. so should i replace the cut down stock or just use it as a shooter.
