    Bedding opinions

I see many threads relating to the bedding of specific firearms, but nothing relating to a more general question... Is there a consensus regarding re-bedding a milsurp rifle and how that affects its value from a collector's point of view?

It seems to me that the only way to properly complete the job is to free-float the barrel which means altering the front hand guards from their original configuration. That is, by doing so you are altering the correct configuration of the rifle to enhance its accuracy at the expense of its ability to strongly mount a bayonet.

Put simply, is re-bedding a milsurp considered an activity that "Bubba" engages in?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Not all barrels function fully floated, e.g. SMLE, as opposed to the No.4.
The SMLE requires pressure to reduce whip.
Mausers are not as finicky, but any alteration from original reduces the collector value.
    ..........yes to the final question.

My opinion is yes, it does affect the value from a collectors point of view. And I am somewhat less concerned with originality than a lot of people are. I believe in maintenance and that whatever a soldier at the time would have done is fine to do now. Cleaning, keeping rust off, replacing broken parts etc.

Bedding is not original, would not have been done and thus becomes something "bubba" would do.

It will reduce the size of the group that would be interested in owning such a rifle and thus reduce its value.

On the other hand, there are some who would prefer a more accurate rifle that might be interested in it but finding that person would be difficult.

If I want an accurate rifle, I buy one that is designed for that purpose, not a historical piece.
