A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. No. His story is just speculation and hearsay. Altering a serial number is a legal issue. Altering that script is not.

However, if that serial number was ever an M2 stamped NFA Underwood then it could very well be exactly that, a huge legal issue.

Can't say that I have ever seen an Underwood hand stamped 2 over 1. And we know they were not machine stamped M2. With some resource material a person could make a strong case for this one.
But altering that area on a high number Inland or Winchester would be a different issue.
