Back on the topic of M3 knifes: My dad carried a carbine (and sometimes a 1911a1 too) on Iwo Jima. He was not issued an M3 knife, nor had he seen any bayonets for the carbine, yet (though he saw some carbines with bayonets later on Okinawa after he left Iwo). He was issued a bayonet from an M1 Garand. He said the only time he "pierced flesh" with it, was using it as a skewer for roasting fish they caught by throwing grenades in the surf, on occasions they got back down to the beach when the combat had cooled down. He said once they went off shore in a small boat and did "C4 fishing" for the unit.

Love those stories. Maybe we should do a thread on "Stories" from our dads from WW2 for the upcoming 70th of D-Day? They may not be completely factual in some cases but they always made good listening, and even better telling.
