And also remember that I have the No.32 scope for your Indian No.4(T), and willing to trade it for another No.32 of equal or better condition.
Not heard from you in a couple of years on this one.

Yes, this is correct Warren. The rifle is still sitting in my gun room, since I didn't found any possibility yet to ship a scope abroad. The problem also is that the scope must have once been seperated from the bracket, because basically my buttstock is matching to your scope, but not the stock to the action.

Regarding the original question: haven't had the rifle apart for some time, but if I remember correctly the cutouts are on bottom, as they should be. At least the scope locks in the position.

Well, thank you so much to share the picts of your rifle and scope. Wonderful.
I wonder about the position of the rail. The photos that one can see on different 1903 books show the rail with the thin part at the front. On your '03, the thin part of the rail is at the rear. Well, OK, but in your case, the two notches should be on top.
I would be glad if you could explain me the reason. Frankly, I think the best position for the rail is the position of yours.
Due to being sent a link to a rifle at the Cody Museum by a friend I looked up their online library. In this library I found a M1903 with the W&S telescope, serial #633.977. This particular rifle has the dovetail mounted to the rifle exactly the same way as mine, see [url=http://collections.centerofthewest.org/treasures/view/firearm_rifle_breechloading_repeater_selfcontained _metallic_cartridge_4#]yourself here.

Besides this I might mention that all pictures of the SA Museum offers online show the scope rail attached exactly as pictured in Brophy.

Sorry for bringing up my old thread after so many years. I was looking at Brophys book today and thought while at hands I might check through the sniper section again. Then I noticed something: Brophy pictures W&S M1908 telescope #1, as well as one page later #1624 with the scope rail exactly as on my rifle, with the short end facing the front. Plus if you look one page later he shows pages from the original manual of the scope. They obviously show the scope rail mounted exactly the same way, with the short end facing towards the front! If not enough, even the 1913 telescope is displayed with the short end facing towards the front in this manual.

The action #409.758 on page 499 however already has the scope rail the opposite way, with the extended end facing towards the front.

Did anyone ever check the original pictures of W&S telescopes whether the position of the scope would allow indication if the extended end of the scope rail faces towards front or rear?
