Hi,
Just received a reproduction cleaning rod set and oiler for my 1898 krag from Numerich.
Coudn't figure out the stowage so I removed the Butt Plate - found two cavities, one with three nice holes to stow the rod, the other fits the oiler. Question is - HOW would one remove the oiler without taking off the plate ? Maybe the buddy who is adding to the rod for cleaning has his in his pocket.

kablair: Only the top storage hole is used on the Krag stock. The second (lower) hole is to lighten stock weight. The three pieces of the rod are inserted into their holes after the oil container is laid in the trap first. (Use some cleaning patches to quiet things down).

kablair: Your Krag butt plate should have a hinged trap to access the top hole. I'm attaching a picture of a Krag three-piece rod, oiler, and muzzle-cap/front sight protector.

Krag oil bottle and three-piece rod in place. Note wear on inside of butt-trap door. It is wise to put folded-up cleaning patch in trap, to hold things from moving.

thanks again, I know what they look like, just bought a set - would like a screwdriver and a front sight protector. It is a tight fit - it would appear that the rods must be removed before the oiler can be removed.

The oil bottle has to go in first and then the three rods. Order is reversed, when taking accessories out. I included pictures to make sure you had the right items.
Muzzle/sight covers and 1897 Screw-Drivers show up on ebay, from time to time. Values are around $65 for brass cover and $85 for the tool (correct originals). Beware of fakes and repros!Attachment 53982Attachment 53981
