    Early Colt SP1 photos

Some detailed photos of a three digit Colt SP1 from 1964, both the sling and magazine are original to this rifle. There are early features that were changed during the four digit production, the front sight base being one of the first along with the thin barrel. The gas tube is not steel. The early buffer continued into the four digit production.Attachment 54818Attachment 54819Attachment 54820Attachment 54821Attachment 54822Attachment 54823Attachment 54824Attachment 54825

That is a work of art Robert! Do you have a shot looking down at the FCG? That front sight base is the stype that Olympic Arms settled on for their ARs. I always like the clean lines and machining of this FSB.

    buffer in four digit

Here is the original buffer in s/n 25xx, still the early type, many ofAttachment 54826 these were changed-out years ago by civilian shooters to the later type. You almost never find a early buffer for sale now!

That's what probably happened to mine, the new parts were seen as better then.

    Edgewater buffer

My research shows the following, if anyone has additional information, it would be appreciated.

The new Colt buffer, as we know it today was introduced in Dec 1966. It was designed to solve the ball powder induced cyclic rate problem. The US Army started a retrofit program to replace all of the Edgewater buffers in service rifles which was completed by 1967. Attachment 54966
