Suit mount for the gpmg???

Not made for the LMG, but the GPMG bracket was used to mount the SUIT to the LMG.



This came about from a request from 3 PARA as an operational requirement for N Ireland.

Whether it had limited use with 3 PARA in NI after it had been developed and trialed ???

Great picture. On that basis, as I mention on page 1, you could mount the SUIT on any weapon with the STANAG dovetail.......... the 81mm mortar too! The trouble with side mounted sights is that the user ALWAYS has to be aware/remember that at whatever range he is shooting at, the MPI will ALWAYS be x" to the right of where you aim. And in the case of our L4A9/SUIT type set-up you've already got the offset of the mount PLUS the offset of the SUIT, probably taking you up to 2.5 - 3" off. And at 300 yards in half light, that's a fair bit of working out to do

Off to one side a bit, the reason the old L4's hung on for so long in NI was their long range ability AND single shot capability following 'an incident'.

I also have one of these mounts in the collection. & have had a few through my hands over the years. Like Skippy, never seen one in use in Brit Service. But I think they are Brit Manufacture. Also seen the same mount for the SUSAT sight unit as well. Just missed one by seconds, at a Militaria Fair a short while back!.....

Also used on the buffered mount for the .50" BMG made by MANROY (No longer trading. Bought out by FN) So MAY have been or Minor usefulness on the buffered vehicle Mount?......

I understand that someone has found a supply of the serpentine springs for the SUIT sight mount. They were FAR better............. We had these mounts on the .50 Browning STANAG dovetail. Made by SDE to fit the SUSAT as described by Tankie. Suprisingly the big .50 was very forgiving, probably because it was a slow firing gun but the SUSAT sights fitted to them didn't shake themselves to bits. IT was always a problem getting a live firing trace area for the BRownings as they needed a 8Km danger area. I always thought that if ammo or money was short, they could always cancel a shoot on the grounds that the live firing template was 'unavailable'.

Just looking at nzl1a1collector,s pics in post #8 Fig 9 (d) the M16, I bought a mount on ebay many years back to mount my SUIT to my AR15 (M4) but believe its an Israeli version..... as its different to one in the pic, can anyone confirm its origins?

Only ever mounted it the rifle once but not at the range, then sold the rifle a few months later as I,d had enough of it, loved the rifle but it didn't love being a straight pull....

I wonder how 'they' got on with using one on a 5.56 rifle. I mean....., at what range would you zero it? And then, presumably it stayed fixed at that range because if you flipped the range adjusting lever over, (was it 300/500 yards from memory on the L1A1) the trajectory of the 556 wouldn't match that of the 762 at that range. Or am I missing something. Maybe they changed the range cam for the 556 versions to give a couple of reasonably accurate ranges

Off the subject a bit...... We had a SUSAT on the minigun/gatling trials guns mounts during the trials. It stayed the course but really, sighting - such as it was - was done by watching where the ground or water turned to dust or steam! Later we had a red-dot reflector gunsight

On my SUSAT fitted to my SA80 I modified the range knob/thumbscrew so that instead of the usual 100m clicks I could get it to operate in smaller graduation elevation clicks that I recalibrated it to when I had a 600m range to myself one day

The Israeli's used a lot of SUIT Sights on their M16's, the sights just had an altered range label stating 250m / 450m.

I haven't used the M16 mount. Until recently I never had an M16A1 to try it out on, but because its an automatic I can't fire it. But it dose look good.

That's interesting KtK and with the flat trajectory, those would be about right too. On my calibrated SUSAT, 1,2 and 300 are all only a click apart!
