butt plate

I'v got a No1 mk3* very good shape BSA 1916 and has a steal butt plate with a brass trap door and very worn does any one know what the finish would have been or was the rifle to have a brass plate?

It should have a brass buttplate unless I'm grossly mistaken.

ive never heard of this before , but learned long ago - never say 'never' or 'always' when it comes to enfields , yet , are you certain its steel ? not ZAMAK/mazak ? still wouldnt have a brass bit if original , but im wondering at the steel

Yes its steel .with maybe chrome or some kind of plating on it .Well whats left of it, and bare steel and brass door.I'v had the rifle for some time and never really thought about it till now all the other Enfields I'v seen and have had brass or alloy ,

I had one once which had a brassplated steel buttplate. HTH

There are some early No1 butt plates which are made of steel and have a brass trapdoor.

Yes

I've seen 'parade' Lee Enfields and bayonets where ALL the metal work had been chromed. Seen Springfields that way too so I guess it was done in the USA also.
