Interesting article.
The SAL self-loading rifle appears to have been set up for the No.6 Bayonet, not the No.5. The grips appear unique however, so maybe something else?
SAL expected to begin work on the pilot in January 1946 and have it ready by April. Soon thereafter the
British
changed their requirement to conform to the US T65 .30-06 round
As though the UK ever had the slightest intention of adopting the .30-06 round!
Probably another of those little changing specification games detailed in "Without Warning".
Do examples of these rifles still exist?

First, the worker firing the M1 Carbine is clearly wearing coveralls with the Inglis "Diamond" on them, so I doubt he is a Small Arms Limited employee.
Second, the EX1/EX2 look to be a cross between an SLEM-1 (Enfield developmental FN49) and an Tokarev SVT 38/40, 2 rifles which also show a design relationship.
Third, the "second trigger" is rather obviously the shadow of the single trigger from the flash photography.

The US "T65" was a "shortened 30-06" cartridge based on the .300 Savage case. I have sample cartridges in my collection dating as early as 1945.
