    A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Interesting article.

    The SAL self-loading rifle appears to have been set up for the No.6 Bayonet, not the No.5. The grips appear unique however, so maybe something else?

    SAL expected to begin work on the pilot in January 1946 and have it ready by April. Soon thereafter the Britishicon changed their requirement to conform to the US T65 .30-06 round
    As though the UK ever had the slightest intention of adopting the .30-06 round!

    Probably another of those little changing specification games detailed in "Without Warning".

    Do examples of these rifles still exist?

    “There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

    Edward Bernays, 1928

    Much changes, much remains the same.

    3 comments;
    First, the worker firing the M1icon Carbine is clearly wearing coveralls with the Inglis "Diamond" on them, so I doubt he is a Small Arms Limited employee.

    Second, the EX1/EX2 look to be a cross between an SLEM-1 (Enfield developmental FN49) and an Tokarev SVT 38/40, 2 rifles which also show a design relationship.

    Third, the "second trigger" is rather obviously the shadow of the single trigger from the flash photography.

    The US "T65" was a "shortened 30-06" cartridge based on the .300 Savage case. I have sample cartridges in my collection dating as early as 1945.
