    1899 Krag Carbine

    Gentlemen,serial number comes up no where.Model 1899.Serial number 851641.,Has a later rear sight,C marked.Not a cut down barrel,front sight is dove.Any info would be good,,thanks

    The front sight shouldn't be a dovetail, if that's what you're saying. They should be silver soldered on. Rear sight sounds correct. Are you sure the first number isn't a 3? 351564 is a carbine and so is 353506, both marked as '99...but I don't have any numbers as high as 8xxxxx.

    Yes,it's 351641,sorry.The front sight is a Kragicon,matched up pictures.The front band is U marked.

    The U means UP...as in when you point the barrel up, the U is correct side up. Or it's on backwards. Dates way back to the muskets...so the info is a guideline for where your carbine sits. It showed those two numbers were at San Antonio Arsenal for testing...

    There's individuals here that know bags about these, they'll find you in a bit and fill in for you. We'd love to see pics if you could...that will also help with other info. Welcome to the neighborhood...by the way...

    When you say front band, do you mean there is more than one? Some carbines were modified for issue to college ROTC units. Here is a picture of one of the modified carbines, however the front/upper band should not be marked.

    As to the numbers, it is definitely a "3" as Kragicon production stopped well short of 500,000.
