Non-existant trigger housing?
My SA M1, no. 3545400, is supposed to have a -16 trigger housing, at least according to every book and on-line resource I've checked. It has a -14 in it now, BTW. I've been looking for a few years now, at many gun shows and on line, and have never seen even one. A couple of people that I've talked to have told me that in fact there is no such thing! I'm beginning to believe it. Based on the resources I've looked at, there were about 100,000 rifles built in the March 1945 timeframe that should have this part installed- that's a lot of rifles!
So, does anybody have any insight on this?
Are the references wrong? Do they exist- if so, where are they all?

Production of the -16 Trigger Housing was relatively limited, from Jan '45 - Mar '45 and they DO exist. Those "couple of people" are mistaken. Keep looking.....
Nice photo of one here: I got my 3rd M1 March 1945 springfield

Your rifle would just as likely (maybe more likely) have had a -18 housing than a -16. SA started using the -18 housings in February '45.

I would agree with Latigo 1. Your receiver 3545400,, was most likely manufactured and serial numbered in early March 1945 and the rifle assembled sometime latter. According to Table 5.1, page 192, of Scott Duffs book "M1 Garand : WW2", between mid Feb. and mid Mar. 1945, the -16 and -18 overlapped. After mid Mar. the -18 was in use exclusively.
