22 extractor info needed
my efforts to make a dependable 22 extractor have been fruitless.
I only have some photo's to work from. I have been unable to track down drawings and dimensions for the extractor. you may recall my post about mailing a 22 out of a DP SMLE https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=48115
I have made 3 rifles like this one and just cant get the extractor to work. I am making them by hand from off cuts of 4140. basically a hacksaw and file.

So far I have found one drawing with no dimensions; it is on an armourer's chart for parts identification.
I'll keep looking.
Do the nice chaps at GPC have any in stock?
Flick me a PM.
Cheers.

You haven't told us what's going wrong with them Mr E! The obvious is that they simply don't extract, but if not, then that can only be caused by two things. Either insufficient loading on the extractor by the spring and/or the extractor is riding over the spent case in the breech. Try unloading a live round or a .22" CHS gauge that won't be held hard in the chamber. The claw part has to be undercut so that it digs in instead of just rides over the very rounded .22" rim. I've made loads of them from mild steel.

thanks Peter.
my problem on all 3 rifles is the extractor either jumps the rim leaving the case in the chamber or the extractor pulls the case out aprox. 1/8" then lets go.
I have made several extractors and tried to tune them up but I must be doing something wrong because I always end up the the same results

Is the chamber smooth enough? Are they hanging up?

THey're slipping off the rim of the case. The rim of a .22 case is very rounded and becomes even more so after it's fired due to the fact that it's been blown out a bit - especially more so in a No1 as the bolt head ain't recessed to accommodate it as in the No8 rifle. So the rounded edges of the rim almost cam the extractor off the case
Just make the claw a true, deep, sharp undercut claw. I forgot to say, but when I made a few I just case hardened them to boot.
They say that a .22" extractor should rise up a bit after the round has been chambered, cammed up by the inclined extractor slot (a bit like a No4 and 5 rifle does) so that it if free of the case when the round is fired. Whether this will help, I don't know, but worth a try. Didn't seem to on out sub-cal kits so...........

I am contemplating making a recessed bolt head by adding metal to the bolt face. I think this will be an easier solution rather than persisting with making more extractors in the hope that I get lucky. just solder on a piece opposite the extractor the same thickness as the rim and .25 wide with a radius that matches the rim. this will keep the case trapped long enough to extract I hope.
I actually have 5 .22 conversions done on so far and all need extractors

Why not use an original? Are these No1 or No4 Enfield conversions?

I wonder if it'd be worth trying a different ammo. But really, there's no reason for continual failures. It's just a spring loaded claw that has to draw a tight case rearwards. What's more, this simple action is assisted by some primary extraction for 3/16" or so, so it's not a case of......... anyway.

That would help because it will hold the head firmly and the extractor can't slip. When it comes out of the other chamber, the cartridge can move away from the extractor.
