Bolt noise...........You suprise me about the bolt noise being a problem with the Sten and Sterlings. Where from? In truth, with an API gun like the Mk2S Sten and L34 Sterling, the bolt will barely - if at all - touch the face of the barrel during single shot firing with supersonic/Military spec ammo. There is a simple test that amply proves this. Any noise can only be the bolt going forwards or back. But there's always plenty to learn about Sten and Sterling guns

I have a video of my test of the sten single shot suppressed. The peak dB registered on the meter is the bolt noise.

I will find my video of the L34 and post it as well.

Here is a video of a L34A1 and Sten MKII Suppressed.

The loudest noise from the bolt appears to be when it contacts the barrel face when the gun is empty. The rest of the bolt noise appears to be the movement of the bolt during firing.

    Really quiet guns either way

    Silence is Golden........apparently!

What with the global obsession about "Elf n. Safety" you'd think mufflers would be mandatory, not vilified............

Agreed B i O but then we are still not allowed to have revolving Black powder rifles here let alone a Judge 45/410 revolving rifle/shot gun.

In my day the L34 was considered to be an assassination weapon and thus fired only on repetition; therefore the bolt slamming on an empty breach face did not come into it. Full auto was only to be used in extremis because it wore the moderator too quickly.

You're right Beery. Just as a little point of interest, because of the design and build of the old L34, it was actually a silenced gun as opposed to a moderated one.

On the advanced more scientific courses there was always a great deal of discussion about API and Col. Mike Txxxxx used to show a simple test to illustrate the exact point you made.

An error on my part Peter. These days, I tend to default to the term moderator because "silencer" has been so over used on the past.

One of our Delisles had one of the simple flip-over later Lanchester backsight assembly. EASY to make!
