SA 1942 rifle
I have been keeping track of the lower bands that have a letter stamp, so far I have five different ones. These lower bands with the letter are only found on 1942 Springfield rifles manufactured during the spring and early summer months of 1942
Has anyone else found them ?Attachment 59158Attachment 59159

My early SA '42' ( 4423xx) has a w on the outside of the lower barrel band.

A lower band with Y stamped on the left side just sold on ebay. First time I've seen Y.
I have seen or heard of codes A B D E G H J R S T U W Y . I don't recall seeing any numbers, only letters.
Original rifles with coded bands I've seen so far run from May '42 into Oct. '42. I've seen more original rifles in this range without coded bands.
Rifle 924847 wears a J code lower band and, coincidentally, the receiver also has the J inspector code.
Rifle 730585 has an R coded band. This rifle also has the large wheel EMcF stock.
All the coded bands I've seen are stamped on the left side.

My 687,000 with a 6-42 bbl, (Brit Proofed), has an H on it. I always wondered about it.

I have a 9-42 SA (815xxx). I'll have to check it when I get home and see what, if any it has.
