A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I believe these are normal production barrels selected as Guage because they represent either upper or lower limits to tolerances and would have been used to test the fit to the gun. I've never been involved in Bren servicing but I have serviced many Mauser cannon and we had a guage barrel which was the first 18" or so of a standard barrel to test fit in the guns.

This very subject has been aired on this forum a year or so ago. Suggest that you read up on it to save the whole rigmarole of going through it yet again..............
