M-3 Trench Knife - eBay "Unused Mint Condiiton"

I've continued to browse the "completed" listings for M-3 knives on eBay. Trying to learn more about these, and think I see a couple of details in question regarding both the knife and the M8. Anybody want to comment? Thanks! - Bob

WWII M3 knives are very sought after, a good many having been well used in service for their intended purpose and postwar as hunting and camping knives too. I remember there being a discussion that quite a few during the 90's were released from US Gov't stores and sold off. Which apparently affected collector prices at the time but now as seen with that example, the prices have recovered. But, prices and condition also vary with the mileage each blade has seen if you watch what is for sale on Ebay enough. If unissued with box as that one is, the sky is the limit, and a seller can demand top prices if the collector is willing to pay. Also, not to forget as an hard asset investment, militaria seems to be attracting more attention and prices are reflecting. So collectors are facing new challenges as they enter the field or add unique pieces to their collection. Sorry, for the digression. There are modern reproductions of the M3 out there, and apparently the French had new replacements made by some Italian companies awhile back (not sure when) with the original manufacturer US markings copied on them (these were for the French Airborne Troops who had a very high respect for the M3 from what i understand). Also each WWII manufacturer of the M3 had their variations during the war which also makes them a challenge to collect as well. I am sure there are others who can chime in and correct my information if I seem to be off.

Your comments are well taken. It's always interesting to get new insight and details that pertain to values and collectibility of items such as this. I knew about the modern version of this knife that has just the single pin at the pommel, but something about the leather washers and the way the pins are installed just look too perfect on this one. I don't question much else about it, other than the appearance of the leather leg tie, and what appears to be some variation in web materials used on the scabbard. Notice the on the box: "Do not throw! (Ever)." Maybe, knowing it might be passed along someday to his boys or grandsons. - Bob

I hope the link works for this ebay auction. I think it's the same knife I linked to in the original post. Sold in December for $100, then brought $1,150 when listed again in February. - Bob
