1929 Springfiels 10-29

This one was modified in the late 30's. It has a Lyman 48S and a C stock installed for a rifle team I suspect. It gauges under one at the muzzle and has a correct bolt code, J5. The bolt is not marked NS, however, I believe all J5 bolts were Nickle Steel. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but the weather warms up this weekend. This is a beautiful piece well taken care of by a thoughtful owner. It looks shiny because I just rubbed in a coat of Raw linseed oil!

Love the look of those "C" stock rifles. They always looked like a real shooter to me. Never managed to find one though.

Is the "J5" on the top of the bolt handle or on the safety lug? If the former, it dates to the late 1920s and could be correct; if on the safety lug, 1918, and a replacement.

It appears the commercial rear sight was replaced at some point.

It is not mentioned on SRS.

It's on the lug and JB said it was correct. I'm quite sure the receiver sight was replaced at some point down the road. I love the Lyman 48S as it has 1/4 MOA clicks. Regards, Rick.

Hmmm... according to John's bolt charts, a J5 on the safety lug indicates 1918.

I have a range report and need some help. I had to remove the rear sight and with the peep bottomed out, I was still shooting 4 inches high at 100 yards. So, I need a taller thicker post as the blade is jut too thin for my 69 year old eyes. Any thoughts on this? Anyway it shot great. I used Lake City Ball and my last group was decent at 1 3/4". I'll be shooting a deer with this rifle come hunting season.

If you want taller and thicker, get a USMC #10 blade.

I double-checked with John on the J5 bolt and he agreed with me ... the J5 bolt you have could have been "original" in the snese that the rifle, being made after 1927, was made as a parts gun and any earlier bolt could have been fitted.
