    1900 dated LEC I* in .22

This little carbine is a recent addition to my "training rifle" collection. It is all matching and original with the exception of the top wood, correct in every detail except that it is now in 22, it is fully service marked.
This carbine is not unique as I have been told of the existance of at least two more, the question is who did the conversion and when?
It had not been proofed when first received which might indicate that it was done whilst still in service but as far as I know there is no service designation for it so could it have been done as a "volunteer" pattern?
The .303 barrel has been sleeved and the bolt head has been changed for a what looks like a .22 no23? there is something that looks like a 3 stamped after the last 2 but I can't find any reference to it elsewhere.
I am convinced that this is not a "new" or "undiscovered" member of the Enfield family but it certainly interesting and will probably raise a few questions as to it's origins.

If you ever get tired of it paul, let me know. There's a little carbine shaped gap in my gun cupboard, and the fresh air here in Norfolk would work wonders for the old girl in her dotage.
