    Remington Rand

I am new to the forum I picked this up last year been wanting one for years walked into local gun store and caught this with the corner of my eye and it was mine. I was issued one of these when I did the quarter deck watch when in the Navy back in the 1980's probably why I wanted one. This is a 1944 issued one by the serial number.

Nice looking rig, I saw then too in about '84 I think on the USS Alamo. When the brow guard closed up the took weapons topside, 4x pistol belts complete, 4x M14icon rifles, 4x BAR belts with mags, 4x Remington 870s and 4x M1 Cartridge belts with 12 ga ammo...I wanted those too.

We still had the Remington 870's and the M-14's and 1911's in the armory back in the 1980's use to be on the security alert force ,fire party , petty officer of the watch on the quarter deck on duty day. When we had drills for security you go to the armory they hand you a card it tell the position were to go and a weapon some times a shot gun or the M-14 . Never forget how I qualified with the 870 on the flight deck out at sea three shots in the ocean your qualified. On the quarter deck I stood petty officer of the watch at the beginning of the watch you transferred the 1911 to the on coming watch check to make sure it was unloaded and you had 5 rounds in both mags that's right only 10 rounds and you don't load it until the OOD officer of the deck tells you to in a emergency you pull the slide back hold the mag in the other hand and wait for the order to lock and load hope after Sept 11 hope that has changed you should have a little more freedom to load it in a emergency or even have it loaded all ready a empty gun no good when a emergency happens.

When you said Remington 870 pump shot gun we also had them in SBU XI. On one actdutra we went down to SBU 22 down in New Orleans La barrowed 4 boats from them went down the Mississippi River into the gulf and navigated to Mobile Alabama did war games up the Mobile river and that were this photo was taken see what I was armed with. Dam would like to get a surplus issued one but that will never happen. SBU22 still around they are now called special boat team 22 they did move to Stennis Mississippi only riverine warfare unit left.

Time passes and I forget the exact configuration of the 870s I saw. I'm sure they had full length mags but don't remember if they had the front brace...I had to build one myself from available parts locally, never been able to find a surplus model with the bayonet lug.

I have one handy in my bedroom. Purchased in the early 80's from a shop in Florida I worked in as a kid. It's a simple police gun with plain walnut, 20" rifle sight barrel and improved cylinder choke. It'll print nice groups at 75 yards with 1 ounce slugs or is a real crowd pleaser at close range with 20 pellets, #1 short magnum buckshot. The best home defense weapon ever designed!
