A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. So, there's a canvas M1icon sling at Normandy...earlier than I've seen them before.

Am I correct in that the hump on the slider didn't show up till postwar?

It was a later innovation...they started in '42 and initially they were OD3. Then they changed to OD7 and the flat slider went to end war plus. Apparently it was much later, even into the '50s the hump sliders came out...

I'd be curious to know which type G.I.'s preferred, if any. I would imagine the leather 07's got pretty ratty after a while.

There was a story by one of ours here that originated with a WW2 vet stating..."I never saw anything but leather slings"... Canvas can get ratty too after a bit...believe me.
