    Recoil spring lenght

TM 9-1005-211-34 says the free length of the recoil spring should be approximately six and a half inches long. The springs in my Ithaca and Remington Rand are only six inches long. Which one is right?? TIA

In my armorer course materials it says, "Free length of spring must not be less than 6 inches. A flat appearance on either end of the half coil is not required."
