    Rifle Identification

    Hello,

I recently purchased a .303 Britishicon Lee Enfield, or at least, that's how it was marked. I have been doing some research trying to identify and classify my rifle. I am hoping forums such as these can help me.

I have been able to identiofy some of the markings on my rifle but there are a few I cannot find. Below are some pictures of the engravings. Can someone help me make sense of them?

    Thanks!

Winchester (W before serial number) made Pattern 1914 Mk1* rifle. Made in 1917 ('17 on barrel).

Well it ain't a Lee-Enfield because, although designed at Enfield Lock, it is a modified Mauser type action.

It has pre-1954 civilian "Military" (oddly, that is not a contradiction in terms) Proof marks.

Winchesters were the most accurate P14 and you have a matching bolt. If the barrel is not cut down you have the beginnings of an easy restoration project. Is there a cartouche on the right side of the butt?

The rear sight ears have been removed by the looks of the last photo, with something pinned in place. Any chance of a photo of that modification?

Oddly although that was the view of the P14 by the Britishicon Government, apparently the US preferred the Eddystone M1917s.

Id never heard that. After firing a whole bunch of 14s and 17s its easy to see the superiority of the Winchesters. Maybe i am biased?

Well spotted looks like some heavy tinkering. Weren't some of the snipers modified like that officially? My p14 has the fine back sight but the stocks not marked f, reckon it's a ringer.

    Hello,

Here are some more pictures as requested.

Smellymarkfive: there is no cartouche on the right side of the butt and I don't think the barrel was cut down but you tell me!

Kiwi: the sight is not fixed but is missing the part that raises it.

I really just want to date the rifle and identify the make and model. Thanks Beerhunter for the information.

Simple, this is a P14 in .303 that was completely sporterized. Including the recoil pad. Most of those pads went soft and melted flat. Nothing special about it, just one of thousands. It's not a special sniper or anything like that...just a guy's hunting rifle.
    Regards, Jim

    Jim,

That's great. All I wanted was a bush gun for deer. However, I would like to find the back piece to raise the sight. Any suggestions where I could find one?

    Thanks!
