    Chassepot Maison Callebaut Improved Cartridge

    P. Ganidel in his 1873 work, recommends the adoption of an improved Chassepot cartridge rather than a metal cartridge conversion. The proposed improved Chassepot cartridge is the work of Maison Callebaut, Paris and was the subject of trials at the invitation of the Minister of War by the 14th Division at Saint Medard.

The work can be downloaded at http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt...557t.f4.langEN

Unfortunately there are no illustrations and M. Ganidel's verbal descriptions are appalling useless. It does sound promising but I am puzzled as M. Ganidel suggests that the original standard cartridge is combustible and the Callebaut is an improvement as an expulsive one. However, the standard cartridge (made as per the original specifications) is expulsive.

I have diligently searched t'internet for further information in any form but without learning more than others are equally interested but equally baffled.

I am aware of various modern and reproduction method to make the standard cartridge and that Captain Basil Gras's drawn brass cartridge conversion (and James Kerrs' Boxer case and Kynoch's) won the race.

Can anyone please shine any more light on this interesting cartridge beyond the work above?
