Another day at the range...with a K-31

Last week I had such a good time at the range I felt another trip was in order.

My son has a pretty accurate K-31 that we've only shot with iron sights. I've had some Swiss Products gear (clamp on scope mount, muzzle brake, etc) for it for some time, but my son has never indicated any interest in using it. Yesterday I decided to mount a scope on the K31 and take it shooting. I didn't have much time, so I went to Lincoln (15 minute drive instead of 1 hour to Sac Valley Shooting Center).

I clamped the mount on, slipped a Bushnell Elite 5-15 scope on the mount, installed the muzzle brake on the barrel and snapped a cheek rest on the butt. Elapsed time...about 5 minutes.

Here's what it the K-31 looks like all tarted up...



After getting it on paper and reasonably lined up at 25 yards, I set up some targets at 100 yards. First I tried some GP11...the gold standard in military ammo.



Then with my handloads...



I had some Hornady 168 gr Amax commercial and some Norma 200 grain Diamond 7.5 Swiss ammo also and both did pretty well.

I then set up some targets at 200 yards (the max at Lincoln) and gave it a try. The 200 yard line at Lincoln is very high...it is made so that you shoot over the 100 yard berm, so the targets are about 10 feet higher than the firing line. Plus the bullets pass pretty close to the 100 yard berm as they go over it, which could have an affect on a breezy day, like it was.

At any rate, because of the higher targets and the offset mounting of the scope, it was a challenge to get a good cheek weld on the rifle. I dialed in an elevation adjustment and tried my handloads first. I noted that the point of impact shifted considerable to the right. So much so, that after two shots I felt like I better adjust the scope, lest the rounds land completely off target.



Then the GP11 (and you can see why I call it the Gold Standard in 7.5 Swiss ammo) .63 MOA!

Coincidence! The bloke I normally shoot with has just purchased one too. I advised him not to. But we both shot with it last Sat. and I am now totally convinced. We both scored best ever results with our first few rounds. So now I´ve got another calibre to reload.

I would have been surprised if you had not had good results. I've got a number of Swiss rifles, everyone of them is amazingly accurate. Combined with the GP11 ammo, they are fabulous shooting implements.

What ammo were you using?

Prvi Partizan ... but from now on my own re-loads. `Twas almost boring getting such good results all the time.

I've shot alot of PPU through my Swiss rifles. Good ammo and great brass for reloading.
