whenever i win something i didn't think i would, my wife verbally skins me... so i showed her this post...

and her response...


"you know, if you actually came home with a tank i'd be kind of impressed"

Never mind the parking; it takes up about the same footprint as a '59 Cadillac, and has a MUCH tighter turning circle. You should be worrying about the fuel bill.

In some parts, these are apparently "road legal". The rubber "pads" on the tracks are fairly gentle on the road, if expensive to replace, and if kept in tune, this beast will EASILY keep up with traffic almost anywhere except "open" freeways and autobahns. And better than almost ANYTHING off-road.

Also brings a whole new meaning to "right-of-way".

Excellent "shopping cart" for opening-day at the big sales; could be a bit interesting in the supermarket car-parks, though.

I recall seeing something about a bright yellow one running around in Britain.

Is the bottle of "bubbly" for celebration or commiseration?

My imagination keeps wandering at the sight of this "tank".....

Back to Subic Bay in the Philippines in the Vietnam era, seeing this as a Jeepney with decorated wheels, pin-striping, art-deco designs, multiple running lights, and three internally illuminated full-figured, naked-goddess hood ornaments......

Or the perfect vehicle for the 1930s W.C. Fields movie about the loathsome selfish Road Hog. Imagine seeing this vehicle in your rear view mirror.......

Or General George Patton perched atop this, flaunting his ivory handled pistols, liberating small French and Italian villages as beautiful maidens throw flowers in his path and serve him champagne ........

Or an urban defense vehicle for high crime neighborhoods; you'd never be the victim of a drive-by shooting or the center of a gang-land attack......

Can you imagine if Al Capone or John Dillinger or Bonnie & Clyde had one of these. I can see Edward G. Robinson or Jimmy Cagney or Humphrey Bogart laughing as they heisted a bank.........

I can't imagine anyone wanting to break into your home with this monster in the driveway. Put a sign on it:
"If you think this is a monster,
it's mild-mannered compared to my Attack Dog!"

Things I see is a great resto project, a drip tray for the oil on the drive way and some headache tablets after the bottle of shampers good for you Bob now you really have got lots and lots to do, the guys at the gun club will be impressed when you rock up and take out the targets with a single round!

The Scimitar was going to be all things to all men and replace, well......., pretty well everything apparently. But it seems to have got lost in the translation somewhere according to those tankies in the know! As a light tank it was good. Good that is, if you need a light tank. But light tanks are not quite the thing in Europe where the other side have heavier tanks......... As a reccy vehicle it was quite versatile but versatile isn't the same as nimble so it needed to roam or hunt in threes or fours.

Because so many were ordered it was decided to use the boat (the hull part) for other things. An ambulance, signals station, Armoured HQ, forward Obs point, mobile operating theatre, fishing cabin, canteen - just joking at the last two, but you get the idea. The trouble was that those things were already in being and roomier in the plentiful and already in service 432 which could do all that the Scimitar could barely do - and it could carry a section of fully armed troops.

The irony is that the little Ferret - a true reccy vehicle was only withdrawn a couple of years before the vehicle that was scheduled to replace it....... The Scimitar!

That said, it had spectacular sales to those parts of the world who wanted what it really was. A light tank! It was also very difficult to recover I'm told. And like all track laying vehicles, sand and track-pins (the track axis pins) are arch enemies
