    Gewehr 98- Danzig 1901

New addition to the collection here a pre WW1 Gewehr 98 built by Danzig in 1901 and still retains the old 200m sight base however the sight itself is at the 400m setting.

    Neat piece of history anyway!

I'd love to get my hands on it for an all over look. The wood is in great shape and even though there isn't a lick of blue on lots of it, I'll bet under the wood it's about perfect. Nice old rifle. Is there a small rear handguard missing?

Is it matching? Photos of the serial number on the bolt, trigger guard, floor plate, bands, screws and stock would be appreciated as well. If you can remove the hand guard by sliding the rear band forward, the number should be written in pencil in it's barrel channel.

And the receiver and bolt are "in the white" (polished) which is the original finish, very nice. The in the white finish was retained through the end of production by Imperial makers in 1918. If these parts are blued, it has been refinished post-WW1 by Germanyicon or a foreign user or by our old friend Bubba. From what we can see of the barrel it seems to have a lot of original blue and that is great. The butt plate should also be in the white as well as the graduations on the rear sight, all other parts will be blued.

Why did the Germans get rid of the 200m sight setting? Was it something to do with the adoption of the .323 diameter 8x57? I was aware they started at 400m for the Gewehr 98 but was unaware they had a 200m setting when they first started production.

The bolt is mismatched entirely, the rest of the rifle is matching minus one of the bands. I'll get photos off once I find where the camera disappeared to (last place to look as always!)

Around 1904/05 was the adoption of the .323 spitzer cartridge and the sight settings changed over then (if my memory is on point tonight.)

Is that a fact? I didn't know that. I know about some of the other things they did, like leaving the inside of the Mauser pistol white while hand bluing the outside... Hadn't heard about these. Haven't seen that many originals either. Makes it all the nicer.

Glad to be of some help Jim, the Gew88 and the Kar88 as well had the same characteristic "in the white" receiver and bolt as well. The Kar98a had a blued receiver and bolt throughout production.
