Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

Pikes made from gas pipes to mount an old bayonet were indeed issued to the Home Guard and I've got some monthly returns here from the Public Records Office showing numbers.

From some pictures, a lot of the "pikes" look like quarterstaffs with an obsolete bayonet "attached". A true weapon of desperation, probably only useful in the hands of a trained and fit, "stick fighter". Of limited value against Germanicon paratroops armed with "long-range bayonets", i.e. MP38s.
