Canadian C1, experimental gas piston system

    Morning all,

Found this very interesting thread over on the Files,

Canadian trials ? What am I? - The FAL Files

Have any of you chaps come across this before, experimental CAL C1 for testing a new gas system design perhaps?

Never seen the like of it, quite a find for the collection of that owner though.

Hi Peter, so what would be the major drawback with this system? These trials pieces are very interesting indeed, I wonder how it found itself surpassed, receiver chopped (as they have to be in the States) and on the US open market?

Its a shame it didn't remain complete and in a Canadianicon museum.

I'm surprised it took sooooooo long for someone to come back and question about the major drawback. And it is/was a major one too that adds much credence to the old saying that '.......if it ain't broke, then don't fix it.....'

I'll let it run for a week or so so the experts out there can sit and ponder. But here's a clue. Think Bren gun..............

The receiver stub dates it to after 1958 as the 1958 CAL C1 receiver I've played with has a different contour at the front.

I'm no expert and the Bren clue is no good to me, but wouldn't the timing of primary extraction be thrown out the window due to less mass to be moved in a rearward direction?

    Sorry, just thinking out loud.
