A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Reminds me of an Okinawa vet interview in the Summer 2008 GCAicon Journal. When he got to the top of Sugar Loaf, the Japs were fleeing down a long trench... he said he shot them in the back as they ran, went through two clips and enjoyed every shot.

"When I got to the top of the hill, there was a straight line trench and the Japaneseicon were in the bottom of it. They looked like a black snake going down the middle of the trench. The reason they looked like a black snake was the soil on the sides of the trench was a lighter color from the light of the flares than the guys down there. The closest one to me was about thirty feet and I could hardly miss. I worked my way down the trench with my rifle and went through eight rounds and the clip flew out. I put another clip in and when I went back to work there was a separation where the last guy I shot was and where the next guy was crawling, so I knew where to shoot next. I was standing right on top of the hill shooting and the guy who had the BAR was lying at my feet. He said “Houston, get down, you crazy fool!” But I said, “It’s like shooting ducks in a barrel,” and I kept shooting. I shot them all in the back and, to tell you the truth, I felt real good about it because they had kicked the crap out of our platoon. I went through two full clips and had just started the next one when the whole top of the hill erupted all at one time."
